If you are departing on a domestic flight, we recommend travelers arrive 2 hours prior to departure. For international destinations, we recommend arriving 3 hours prior to departure.

Where are the Rental Car Facilities?
Answer

All rental car companies are located on the airport property. Free shuttle buses transport travelers between the rental car lot and the Terminal Building.

From the Terminal, Baggage Claim Level, at Arrival Doors 2, 4, or 6, exit DOWN the ramp toward the Ground Transportation Curb. Rental car shuttle buses are operated by each individual car rental company and are located at 2C and 2F.

What Metrorail train takes me to/from Dulles International?
Answer

The Metrorail Silver Line has now arrived at Dulles Airport, and is connected to the Main Terminal by an indoor pedestrian tunnel with moving sidewalks. Signs will guide customers to/from the tunnel, which also links the terminal with Parking Garage 1. Passengers are advised to consult Metrorail’s website for station information, fares and operating hours.

Where Can I Pick Up A Taxi?
Answer

Washington Flyer Taxicabs serve Dulles International exclusively, with 24-hour service to and from the Airport. From the Terminal, Arrivals Level - Baggage Claim, customers should proceed DOWN the ramp at Doors 2 or 6. Signage inside the Terminal directs travelers to the taxi queues.

Where can I get an Uber or Lyft Pick-up?
Answer

Authorized Uber and Lyft drivers may pick up their customers at Dulles International. Travelers should contact their service from their smartphone and coordinate directly with their driver for pickup location.

Where can I get a Shared Ride Van?
Answer

Shared Van services are available for hire at Washington Dulles International Airport. The van operator provides transportation to the Washington D.C. Metro Area, Virginia and Maryland. Shared Vans can be found on the lower level, outside the Terminal, DOWN the ramp at Door 2 or Door 6, on the second curb at 2A and 2H.

Step-by-step directions for connecting travelers may be found using our Virtual Navigation System.  Should you require any assistance in getting to your gate, Travelers Aid Volunteers staff information desks throughout the airport. Please visit any of the numerous Travelers Aid kiosks for information regarding flight statuses, gate locations, or other service information.

Due to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security regulations, Dulles International currently does not provide a designated storage area for luggage. Please contact your airline to see if they will accept your checked baggage earlier than normal.

Can I meet or escort someone to or from a gate?
Answer

Due to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security regulations, escorting someone to or from a gate is prohibited. However, gate passes may be issued at the discretion of each individual airline. Customers should contact their airline regarding information for the issuance of gate passes.

Is there a Kids Play Area at Dulles?
Answer

Dulles is pleased to offer a play area for kids near Gate B70.  The "FunWay" is a great place for kids to unwind before, or after, a flight.  Complete with airport-themed play elements to climb on and to slide down, the FunWay offers an interactive system with over 100 games to play. In addition, there are aviation factoids, and charging stations for parents to rest and relax.  Look for Tommy Tower!  Stay tuned for more play area updates by visiting our Services & Amenities webpages.

How long does it take to clear U.S. Customs?
Answer

Passengers are transported to U.S. Customs and Border Protection facilities within 10 to 15 minutes of deplaning their aircraft.  Processing times can vary, and customers should expect longer waits during peak travel periods.  Most travelers complete the process in less than an hour.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is located in the Terminal Building, Arrivals Level - Baggage Claim, near Baggage Claim 14. A Information Desk, staffed by Travelers Aid, is located near the exit of the International Arrivals Hall. Flight arrival times and other information is available there.

Connections from international flights vary by airline. Dulles Airport provides two separate facilities for processing passengers arriving from international destinations, and  connecting to domestic flights. Read more information specific to the nature of your connection.

Where do I pick up my pet?
Answer

Be sure to check with your airline where you can pick up your pet.  Most pets, checked as baggage, will be hand-delivered to you in the Terminal, on the Arrivals Level - Baggage Claim area.  Pets traveling as cargo are claimed at the traveler's Airline Cargo Facility.  If this is the case, please contact your airline directly for assistance.

Are pets allowed in the airport?
Answer

Generally, pets such as dogs are permitted in the airport on a leash. If you plan to travel with pets, we recommend customers contact their airline for information on pet policies. Additionally,  the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have regulations about pet travel which you may review before your trip.

Dulles International provides designated pet relief areas throughout the Airport, with two areas located beyond security for customers traveling with service animals or pets.  Pet Relief Areas are clearly marked, and contain waste bags and receptacles for your convenience.

What time does the security checkpoint open?
Answer

Hours of operation vary depending on the checkpoint locations, listed below:

  • East Security Checkpoint - 4:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
  • West Security Checkpoint - 3:45 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
  • TSA Pre✓™ - 4:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.
  • During overnight periods, when the East and West Security Checkpoints are closed, customers should use screening lanes next to TSA Pre✓™, located on the Departures Level - Ticketing/Check-In, mid-way between the East and West Security Checkpoint entrances.

What travel documents can I use to get through security?

Proper photo identification is required to enter the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints.  Please refer to the complete list of accepted travel documents for more information.

Can I bring liquids through the security checkpoints?
Answer

Passengers are allowed to bring a quart-sized, clear bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes. These items are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces or smaller, per item.

To whom should I report items missing from my baggage?

Please contact your airline directly regarding any missing items. Claims for missing items may also be filed with the TSA which is responsible for the screening of passengers and baggage at all U.S. airports.

What is CLEAR?
Answer

CLEAR is a registered traveler program that allows members to bypass the traditional document check at the security checkpoint. Customers visit a CLEAR kiosk located in a dedicated lane at the TSA Precheck Security Checkpoint. At the kiosk, customers scan their boarding pass and provide a biometric scan of their finger or eye to instantly verify their identity. After verification, a CLEAR representative will escort the customer into the screening area. CLEAR customers who are also enrolled in TSA PreCheck have the added benefit of directly entering the PreCheck screening lane after their CLEAR identity verification. TSA PreCheck offers expedited screening, for additional time savings.

CLEAR enrollment kiosks are located in the Terminal Building, Departures Level - Ticketing/Check-In, near the East and West Security Checkpoints. The kiosks are open during the same operating hours as the Checkpoints (5:00 am-8:00 pm). The sign-up process takes just a few minutes. Once enrolled, CLEAR can be used immediately. Travelers may also enroll online at https://clearme.com/. Membership fees apply.

Travelers may apply for TSA PreCheck at Dulles International Airport. The office is located in the Terminal Building, Departures Level - Ticketing/Check-In. TSA PreCheck is located between the East and West Security Checkpoint Entrances and is open daily.  Walk-ins are accepted, however, appointments are given priority.  Customers may also begin the application process online at https://universalenroll.dhs.gov/programs/precheck
