In 1996, the Airports Authority completed an architectural milestone with the expansion of the original 1962 Terminal to its design length. Careful attention to the design documents of Eero Saarinen and painstaking construction resulted in a seamless building with accompanying expanded roadways at its front door.  With that project complete, the focus shifted to the Main Terminal's interior.

Construction work on the ticketing and baggage claim levels of the center section of the Main Terminal had a significant impact on passengers. Ticket counter kiosks and baggage claim devices were upgraded to match the facilities in the new east and west extensions of the Main Terminal. The final result maximizes the potential of the Main Terminal's available public space.

An additional below-grade baggage basement supports the expanded baggage systems with a 97,000 square foot facility that is linked to the Main Terminal via a tunnel.  Construction of a new two-level east baggage basement, a 40,000 square foot facility, provided space for additional baggage carousels.
